«When Doves Cry» (en español: Cuando las Palomas Lloran) es una canción del músico estadounidense Prince, y el primer sencillo de su álbum de 1984 Purple Rain. Fue un éxito en todo el mundo, y su primer sencillo número uno en Estados Unidos, encabezó las listas durante cinco semanas. Según la revista Billboard, fue el sencillo más vendido del año. Fue certificado platino por Recording Industry Association of America, el envío de dos millones de unidades en los Estados Unidos.^[3]​ Fue el último sencillo lanzado por un artista en solitario en recibir dicha certificación antes de que los requisitos de certificación se redujeran en 1989.

Video musical

El video musical (dirigido por el propio Prince) fue lanzado en MTV en junio de 1984. Se inicia con unas palomas blancas que salen de detrás de una puerta que se abre para revelar a Prince desnudo en una bañera. También incluye escenas de la película Purple Rain intercaladas con momentos de la banda The Revolution actuando y bailando en una habitación blanca. La parte final del vídeo incorpora un marco de espejo en la mitad izquierda de la imagen, creando un efecto de duplicación. El video fue nominado a Mejor Coreografía en los MTV Video Music Awards de 1985.^[4]​ El video desató la polémica entre los ejecutivos de la cadena que pensaban que su naturaleza sexual era demasiado explícita para la televisión.

Versión de Ginuwine

Una versión por el cantante R&B Ginuwine fue producido por Timbaland en 1996 para el álbum The Bachelor de Ginuwine, un cover de Ginuwine utiliza efectos de sonido de palomas reales en la textura de su pista de música instrumental inspirada en la selva.

• Irish music artist Damien Rice recorded an acoustic cover version of the song. It appears on the Triple J Like a Version compilation.

• Patti Smith's cover of the song was used in the 2003 film Lost in Translation.
• The popular Canadian teen drama Degrassi: The Next Generation, which is known for naming each episode after an 80s hit song, named a two-part episode after this song. The episode dealt with the issue of child abuse.
• Snoop Dogg recreated the ending of the original "When Doves Cry" video at the midpoint of his "Sensual Seduction" video.
