En république populaire de Chine, les parcs nationaux sont appelés « zones d'intérêt paysager et historique d'importance nationale » (Guojia Zhongdian Fengjing Mingshengqu - 国家重点风景名胜区). En 2013, ils sont au nombre de 225. Certains d'entre eux sont des « parcs géologiques nationaux », dont le but est de protéger les sites géologiques d'importance tout en encourageant à la fois le tourisme et la recherche scientifique.
