Strange Days è il secondo album discografico dei The Doors pubblicato nel 1967.[10][11] La rivista Rolling Stone l'ha inserito al 407º posto della sua lista dei 500 migliori album.[12]
Descrizione
Venne registrato negli studi Sunset Sound Recorders e prodotto da Paul A. Rothchild.
In questo album la band adottò per la prima volta strumenti come il sintetizzatore Moog, usato nella title track (che fu tra i primi brani rock a farne uso) e si cimentò nelle consuete composizioni blues-rock, come "Love Me Two Times", dove Manzarek suona un assolo di clavinet. Sono presenti esperimenti di musica concreta (Horse Latitudes) e pezzi di matrice proto-punk (My Eyes Have Seen You). L'album si caratterizza a livello sonoro per una psichedelia sognante, quasi stralunata.
L'album si piazzò alla posizione numero 3 nelle classifiche di allora diventando disco d'oro e successivamente di platino. Con tutto ciò Paul A. Rothchild dichiarò che l'album in realtà fu un mezzo flop: lo considerava il miglior lavoro della band che lui avesse prodotto, ma non aveva un vero e proprio singolo di successo, capace, come aveva fatto Light My Fire con l'album precedente, di trascinare l'album al numero 1 delle classifiche; l'album si spinse al numero 3, non riuscendo quindi, secondo il produttore, a bissare il successo del precedente lavoro. Tuttavia l'album ebbe un successo di vendite più alto del precedente.
Copertina
La copertina dell'album è opera del fotografo Joel Brodsky: non vi compare nessuno del gruppo, se non su due poster appesi alle pareti sul fronte e sul retro della copertina: fu lo stesso Jim Morrison a opporre un netto rifiuto a fare apparire la band in copertina. La fotografia fu scattata a Sniffen Court, un vicolo storico della trentaseiesima Strada a Manhattan, tra Lexington Avenue e la Terza Avenue.
L'immagine di copertina ritrae un gruppo di artisti da strada a New York. La disponibilità di tali artisti per la foto era scarsa, quindi l'assistente di Brodsky si prestò per interpretare il giocoliere mentre un tassista casuale venne pagato 5 dollari per posare come suonatore di tromba; vennero reclutati anche due nani gemelli, uno che appare sulla copertina anteriore e l'altro sulla copertina posteriore, che risulta essere l'altra metà dell'immagine vera e propria. La donna con abito lungo che compare sul retro della copertina è Zazel Wild, una amica del fotografo Joel Brodsky, che oggi dirige una rivista a New York.
Una foto di gruppo della band appare su un poster sullo sfondo di entrambe le copertine, con didascalie della band e nome dell'album; la stessa immagine era apparsa in precedenza sulla quarta di copertina dell'album di debutto della band. A causa di questa sottigliezza e l'assenza di titoli veri e propri, la maggior parte dei negozi di dischi all'epoca dell'uscita del disco applicò alcuni adesivi sulla copertina per aiutare i clienti a identificarla più chiaramente.
