The Futuristic Sounds of Sun Ra è un album discografico del musicista jazz statunitense Sun Ra e della sua Arkestra, inciso il 10 ottobre 1961 per l'etichetta discografica Savoy Records.
Il disco venne prodotto da Tom Wilson, che sarebbe in seguito diventato famoso come produttore di Velvet Underground, Frank Zappa e Bob Dylan.
Il disco
Si tratta del primo album registrato da Sun Ra e dall'Arkestra in formazione ridotta, dopo aver lasciato Chicago per New York City. Secondo il biografo di Sun Ra John Szwed, questa fu la genesi dell'album:[2]
«L'idea era quella di fare solo qualche concerto, forse qualche incisione in studio, e poi di tornare a Chicago per esibirsi ancora al Pershing [night-club]. Ma appena attraversato il George Washington Bridge la loro auto si scontrò con un taxi e bucarono una ruota della macchina del padre del bassista Ronnie Boykins. Senza soldi per riparare l'auto si trovarono bloccati. [Sun Ra] andò a telefonare a Ed Bland e Tom Wilson per dire loro che si trovava in città, e la band si spostò in un paio di stanze d'hotel sopra il Peppermint Lounge sulla Quarantacinquesima strada. Dopo qualche giorno di attesa, Strickland e Mitchell divennero ansiosi, chiamando casa per farsi mandare dei soldi, e se ne andarono. I cinque rimasti si trasferirono in una stanza sulla Ottantunesima strada tra West End Avenue e Riverside Drive, e dopo pochi giorni trovarono un posto più economico dove alloggiare. Sebbene il gruppo non avesse trovato ancora un posto dove suonare, Tom Wilson organizzò una seduta di registrazione in studio con la Savoy Records. Il 10 ottobre attraversarono il fiume per recarsi al Medallion Studio a Newark con qualche musicista reclutato per l'occasione... e produssero uno dei dischi che meglio rappresentano il repertorio che suonavano all'epoca nel corso di una serata in un club.»

Copertina
La copertina dell'album venne disegnata da "Harvey", un misterioso grafico che realizzò le copertine di circa 190 album per la Savoy Records negli anni sessanta;
«Il Rev. Lawrence Roberts, produttore di lunga data della Savoy Records... disse che non furono mai al corrente dell'identità di questo Harvey. Harvey viveva a New York, ed era un tipo molto riservato. Loro gli mandavano un titolo o un concetto sul quale sviluppare l'illustrazione. I suoi lavori non erano cari, e lo pagavano in contanti.[3]»

Ristampe
Il disco è stato ristampato nel 1984 con il titolo We Are In The Future, ma in seguito ha ripreso il suo titolo originale in occasione della ristampa in Compact Disc nel 1994. La Savoy ha ristampato nuovamente l'album nel 2003. Nel 2006 il disco è stato infine ripubblicato anche dalla Lonehill Jazz.
