이 곡은 프레디 머큐리의 45번째 생일인 1991년 9월 5일에 미국에서 싱글곡으로 발매되었고, 영국에서는 12월 9일에 퀸 트랙인 〈Bohemian Rhapsody〉와 함께 더블 A-사이드 싱글곡으로 발매되었다.^[1] 이 노래는 1992년에 "베스트 싱글"로 브릿 어워드를 받았다.^[2] 1999년 퀸의 컴필레이션 음반 《Greatest Hits III》에 수록되었다.^[3]

배경

과거를 회상하며, 로저 테일러는 프레디 머큐리의 건강이 악화되고 있을 때 이 노래를 썼다. 10대로서, 테일러는 1970년에 두 사람(브라이언 메이와 함께)이 퀸을 설립하기 전 1960년대 후반부터 런던 켄싱턴 마켓에서 함께 일했을 때부터 머큐리를 알고 있었다.^[4] 노래의 오프닝 코러스는 "Those were the days of our lives(그것들이 우리 삶의 날들이었기 때문에)"로 회상하는 반면, 두 번째 코러스는 "Cause these are the days of our lives(이것들이 우리 삶의 날들이기 때문에)" 현재를 가리킨다.
