Stockton and Darlington Railway

Stockton og Darlington Railway var et jernbaneselskap som opererte i Nordøst-England fra 1825 til 1863. Det var verdens første offentlige jernbane med damplokomotiver.^[1] Den første jernbanelinjen knyttet kullgruvene nær Shildon ved Stockton-on-Tees og Darlington, og ble offisielt åpnet 27. september 1825. Transport av kull for utskipning med skip ble raskt en lukrativ virksomhet, og linjen ble snart utvidet til en ny havn i Middlesbrough. Kullvognene ble trukket av damplokomotiver fra starten, mens passasjevognene ble trukket av hester. Først i 1833 ble det introdusert passasjertog trukket av damplokomotiver.

Stockton og Darlington Railway var involvert i bygningen av East Coast Main Line mellom York og Darlington, men hovedutvidelsen var på Middlesbrough Docks og vestover mot Weardale og øst til Redcar. Jernbaneselskapet fikk svært alvorlige økonomiske problemer i slutten av 1840-årene, og ble nesten overtatt av York, Newcastle og Berwick Railway. Imidlertid ble det oppdaget jernmalm i Cleveland noe som ga økte inntekter slik at selskapet kunne nedbetale gjeld. I begynnelsen av 1860-årene tok selskapet over jernbaner som krysset fjellkjeden Penninene for å bli med på West Coast Main Line på Tebay og Clifton, nær Penrith.

Selskapet ble overtatt av North Eastern Railway i 1863 noe som betydde en overføring av 320 km jernbanespor og rundt 160 lokomotiver. Åpningen av Stockton og Darlington Railway ble sett på som et bevis på jernbanens effektivitet og årsdagen ble feiret i 1875, 1925 og 1975. Store deler av den opprinnelige ruten er nå betjent av Tees Valley Line.
