Adam Clarke (Moybeg, condado de Derry, 1760 ou 1762 – Londres, 16 de agosto de 1832) foi um teólogo metodista e erudito bíblico britânico.

Biografia

Clarke nasceu na aldeia irlandesa de Moybeg, perto de Tobermore na atual Irlanda do Norte.[1] Após ter recebido uma educação muito limitada, foi trabalhar como aprendiz de um fabricante de roupas, mas, achando o emprego desmotivador, retomou a vida escolar na instituição fundada por John Wesley em Kingswood, perto de Bristol. Em 1782 iniciou suas funções como ministro metodista, sendo indicado por Wesley para atuar no circuito de Bradford on Avon (Wiltshire).

Sua popularidade como pregador era muito grande, e sua influência religiosa é indicada pelo fato de que foi três vezes (1806, 1814, 1822) escolhido para ser o presidente da conferência metodista. Serviu duas vezes no circuito de Londres, sendo que o segundo período foi prorrogado consideravelmente, muito além do que o regulamento permitia, a pedido especial da British and Foreign Bible Society, que contratou-o para trabalhar na preparação de sua Bíblia em árabe. Embora tendo dedicado-se ardentemente ao seu trabalho pastoral, encontrou ainda tempo para o estudo diligente do hebraico e de outras línguas orientais, realizada principalmente com a intenção de qualificar-se para a grande obra da sua vida, seu comentário sobre as Sagradas Escrituras (8 vols., 1810-1826).

Em 1802, publicou um dicionário bibliográfico, em seis volumes, para o qual posteriormente, acrescentou um suplemento. Foi selecionado pela Comissão de Registros para reeditar o Foedera[2] de Thomas Rymer, uma tarefa que, após o trabalho de dez anos (1808-1818) teve que renunciar. Escreveu também Memoirs of the Wesley Family (1823), e editou um grande número de obras religiosas.

Clarke recebeu muitas homenagens e títulos (era membro e Legum Doctor da Universidade de Aberdeen), e muitos homens ilustres da Igreja e do Estado eram seus amigos pessoais. Seus Miscellaneous Works foram publicados em treze volumes (1836), e uma Life (três volumes) por seu filho, J. B. B. Clarke, surgida em 1833.

Contribuição teológica

Comentário sobre a Bíblia

Ele é principalmente lembrado por escrever um comentário sobre a Bíblia que levou 40 anos para ser concluído e que foi um recurso teológico metodista principal por dois séculos.[3] comentários sobre este trabalho são mistos, mas reconhecem sua erudição.[4][5] Sozinho, ele produziu quase a metade do material do grande número de estudiosos que colaboraram nos doze volumes da Bíblia dos Intérpretes. Seu comentário, particularmente aquele sobre o Apocalipse, identificou a Igreja Católica com o Anticristo.

Clarke seguiu Wesley em se opor a um esquema calvinista de salvação, preferindo ao invés as posições Wesleyano-Arminianas com respeito à predestinação, graça preveniente, a oferta de justificação para todas as pessoas, a possibilidade de inteira santificação, e garantia de salvação.[6][7]

Visões teológicas

Como teólogo, Clarke reforçou os ensinamentos do fundador metodista John Wesley . Ele ensinou que a Bíblia fornece uma interpretação completa da natureza e vontade de Deus . Ele considerava a própria Escritura um milagre da graça de Deus que "tira o véu das trevas e da ignorância".[8]

Talvez sua posição mais controversa seja a respeito da filiação eterna de Jesus.[9] Clarke não acreditava ser biblicamente fiel em afirmar esta doutrina, sustentando que antes da Encarnação , Jesus era "não originado". Caso contrário, de acordo com Clarke, ele seria subordinado a Deus e, portanto, não totalmente divino . Isso foi importante para Clarke porque ele sentiu que a divindade de Jesus era crucial para a compreensão da expiação.[7]

A visão de Clarke foi contestada por muitos metodistas, principalmente Richard Watson . Watson e seus aliados argumentaram que a posição de Clarke prejudicava a integridade da doutrina da Trindade. A visão cristológica de Clarke foi rejeitada em grande parte pelos teólogos metodistas em favor da perspectiva tradicional.[7]

Suporte para abolicionismo

Ele se juntou a outros ministros como um dos primeiros críticos da escravidão. Em seu comentário de Isaías 58: 6, ele escreve:

"Deixe os oprimidos irem em liberdade - Como pode qualquer nação fingir jejuar ou adorar a Deus, ou ousar professar que acredita na existência de tal Ser, enquanto pratica o comércio de escravos e o tráfico de almas, sangue, e corpos, de homens! Ó vocês, mais infelizes dos patifes e piores dos hipócritas, joguem fora de uma vez a máscara da religião; e não aprofundem sua perdição sem fim professando a fé de nosso Senhor Jesus Cristo, enquanto vocês continuam neste comércio !".[10]

Trabalhos

Aqui estão livros importantes escritos por Clarke.[11] Há também: três volumes de Sermões, além de vários discursos únicos e peças destacadas; e muitos artigos anônimos no Classical Journal, no Eclectic Review e em vários outros periódicos respeitáveis. Para estes podem ser adicionados a nova edição para a Comissão Registro de Foedera de Thomas Rymer, no fólio, da qual ele viu o primeiro volume, e parte do segundo, através da imprensa.[12] A edição foi abandonada devido à insatisfação com seus esforços.[13]
